TRAILS COMMITTEE

BOARD TO CONSIDER RECOMMENDATION FROM THE TRAILS AND PATHS COMMITTEE REGARDING PROPOSED “WEST SIDE” TRAIL

On June 15th the Trails and Paths Committee conducted a meeting for the purpose of presenting their vision for a future “West Side” trail and taking comments from members regarding the possibilities for such a trail. The Trails and Paths Committee has now presented the Board with a report and recommendation for the proposed project.

The Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, July 27th in a regular Board of Directors meeting. The Trails and Paths Committee recommendation will be presented as a regular agenda item and the Board will take action on that recommendation.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this discussion and provided information for the Board to consider during their decision making process.

WATERTON CANYON CLOSURE Pam Page—Treasurer

I know that you are aware of the upcoming (August 2) closure of the Waterton Trail, and of our concern over potential impacts on our community roads and trails due to increased pressure from non residents seeking a convenient place to hike, or seeking an alternative route to The Colorado Trail. Foremost among our concerns is Trail 19, as well as the back gate entrance to Roxborough State Park. The Board of Directors has begun work on a plan to mitigate these potential impacts. We have ordered No Parking signs to be placed on Raven Run, and elsewhere, stating that non stickered vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense.

We also have signs ordered for the entrance to the park, stating that this is a private community for residents and their guest only. (Unfortunately, we do not legally have the authority to block non residents from using Roxborough Drive) We also need to communicate that there is no access to any bike trails via Roxborough Drive, only one access to public hiking, and virtually no public parking available. We will have information and maps available indicating the nearest public hike and bike trails.

The Board would like to have your ideas, input and suggestions as to other steps that may be taken to mitigate any impacts from non residents, and to protect our property and privacy. We will gladly entertain any thoughts or suggestions you wish to offer on sign placement, other signage that may be necessary, and any other activities you feel will be beneficial, both for the 14 months Waterton Canyon will be closed and ongoing.

Please e mail any of the Board members with your comments. We will keep you apprised of our plans and potential solutions. Our hope is that impact on our community will be minimal, but we need to be prepared in the event that we experience difficulties.

ROXBOROUGH PARK FOUNDATION IMAGE COMMITTEE

GOT WEEDS?

It’s that time of year when robust weeds seem to pop up overnight in the exact spots we were working in the day before. Noxious weeds tend to move in, displacing native and cultivated plants. These weeds usually have no natural controls such as insects. They are highly adaptable to drought and thrive in highly watered areas.

Most noxious weeds may be managed by mechanical control: removing seed heads and bagging them (especially useful for thistles), sometimes by mowing, and digging, of course using the weed tool offered by the Environmental Committee! Broad use of herbicides endangers birds, other wildlife, and pollinators. The poison works its way into our ground water.

Now we see the innocent beginnings of tumbleweed, various thistles, and the dreaded bindweed, strangling anything in its path. Bindweed spreads by seeds and an elaborate root system. Pulling or digging have not been effective. A bindweed root is on display at CSU’s Herbarium that was located 6 feet deep and is the size of a child’s plastic baseball bat! Spraying with herbicide doesn't work. Two methods may be tried:

  • Mow high, if at all. The shade of taller grasses cuts down on sunlight needed for weed growth.
  • Use thick mulch in flower beds. We are fortunate to have our own free supply of mulch at our Recycling Center.

Go get ‘em!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT—AUGUST 3, 2010

ImageThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for the 2010 Annual National Night Out Celebration, scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2010, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. This nation-wide event will bring the citizens of Douglas County together with local law enforcement and emergency service providers to participate in a night of “fun, food, and crime prevention”. This year the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Mushkin Enhanced to stress to the citizens of Douglas County, “Remember to Be Safe.” Located in Douglas County, Mushkin Enhanced is a leading producer of high quality computer memory and performance products.

The purpose of this event is to reduce property crime, through neighbors getting out of their houses, turning on their porch lights, and getting to know each other as well as local emergency service providers. This happens through neighborhoods hosting block parties, which are attended by deputies and employees from the sheriff’s office, fire personnel from local fire stations, and other special guests. The host of a block party can sign up with the Community Resource Unit of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to have visits by an array of guests.

The visits can consist of any of the following groups; K-9’s and their handlers, motorcycles, Race-A-Cop car, patrol car, jail bus, crime scene van, SWAT team member, park ranger, McGruff the Crime Dog, CSV (Community Safety Volunteer), Mounted Patrol, fire fighters and their engines, and many more. These visits allow citizens to interact with law enforcement and fire fighters in a non-emergent atmosphere which builds stronger relationships between the citizens of Douglas County and local emergency services personnel.

Even though the night is fun filled, we also ask that citizens “Remember to Be Safe” and practice good crime prevention by closing their garage doors, locking their doors, and turning on their porch lights, when they leave for their event.

Although National Night Out is run through the neighborhood watch program in Douglas County, your neighborhood does not have to belong to a neighborhood watch group to participate. If you live in unincorporated Douglas County, are interested in having a block party, and would like to meet some of the county’s “finest”, please contact Deputy Michelle Rademacher at 303-660-7510 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for more information or you can download the form from the Sheriff’s Office website, www.dcsheriff.net

DOUGLAS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RACE-A-COP (RAC)

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is excited to announce the introduction of its latest addition to the Race-A-Cop (RAC) program, a 2003 Police Interceptor Crown Victoria Retired Police Car.

This car had been used in the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division and was retired, due in part to high mileage and the Douglas County Government established car replacement procedure policy. The car was graciously donated by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners after many years of service to our community.

This new car as well as the Race-A-Cop (RAC) program is funded through donations and has been fortunate enough to receive donations in excess of $28,000 (in materials and in-kind services for the 2003 Police Interceptor Crown Victoria) from seizure funds and business sponsers. The new paint job was donated by Auto Image.

RAC is designed to promote positive interaction between law enforcement officers and the youth of our community. The program uses a common interest; building and working on race cars, to form a line of communication, which in turn will strengthen our community involvement. The time the officers spend with the students provides a platform for discussing real life situations involving motor vehicles and the use of drugs and alcohol.

Some of the goals of this program are: to provide a non-traditional learning environment, to educate about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and driving, to educate about the dangers of street racing, cover common traffic laws and to create an open line of communication with people who don't usually seek out this type of relationship with law enforcement. Race-A-Cop Scholarships are also awarded as funding is available

In keeping with the theme and in support of advancing the continued development of the Race-A-Cop car it was decided to have the 2003 Police Interceptor Crown Victoria converted to a race car as a community project. The Sheriff’s Office was fortunate to have a School Resource Officer that was instrumental in arranging vocational class participation at Ponderosa High School and Douglas County High School. The students and teacher along with some of our deputies worked side-by- side on the car. This car meant so much to some of the students that they have come back to work on the car and attend events at Bandimere Speedway even after they graduated from high school.

The Race-A-Cop cars attend many events such as: parades, car shows, public safety events and the High School Drags at Bandimere Speedway, to name a few.

The 2003 Crown Victoria joins a 1992 Chevy Camaro, and an enclosed vehicle transport trailer to round off the equipment for the Race-A-Cop program.
