Volume 4 Issue 21 | December 11, 2009 2010 BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION MESSAGE FROM THE ELECTION COMMITTEE Our Foundation’s annual search for candidates to fill seats on our Board of Directors is now underway. There will be two seats to fill this coming February with the three-year term of Board President Greg Liptak and the two-year term of Treasurer Dave Thomas expiring. As of this writing neither is expected to stand for re-election. Notice of vacancies will be transmitted to all members this coming January 8 with Intent to Run Statements due in the Foundation office not later than 4:00pm January 22. Statements received after that cutoff time and date will not be recognized. Our hope would be that more than two members will file intent to run. Contested elections have not occurred very often in recent Foundation history. Of interest is that we have not had a woman serving on the Board for a number of years. Where are the current versions of Rhonda Hansch and Nancy Eklund, both former Board presidents? There are many women in this community who could serve with equal distinction. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOARD MEMBERSHIP The basic qualifications to hold a seat on the Board of the Roxborough Park Foundation are not that onerous. Consider the following: - A legal owner or spouse of record as evidenced by a deed.
- Be current in all Foundation assessments and fines (if any).
- Be willing to devote the required time to attend Board meetings, serve on committees, do special project work, etc. as necessary to accomplish the Board’s goals and mission.
- Accept the position of trust to uphold the covenants, conditions, and restrictions of our Foundation’s governing documents.
- Have a desire to serve the Roxborough Park community.
- Be able to listen and reach decisions in a logical, fact-based fashion.
- Possess the ability to communicate with other Foundation members.
Further, a Board of Director’s candidate should have several issues, concerns, or opportunities he or she would like to see addressed if elected to serve on the Board. It would be helpful if candidates possessed the skills and experiences that would assist in achieving the priorities they wish to pursue. Any plans or programs that would enhance the sense of community in Roxborough Park would also be much appreciated by the membership. SUCCESSFUL HOAS The most successful HOAs (and business organizations) have systems in place to train and develop new leaders. Our Foundation makes an effort in this regard with an extensive network of committees filled with volunteers, many of whom are former Board members. These committee members gain some familiarization with the operations of the Foundation, and have served as a source of Board candidates for many years. This reservoir of committee talent – as well as non-committee members – is being called upon to step forward as candidates to replace the two departing Board members. Primary training for new Board members is the “on the job” variety supplemented by some excellent training materials developed by our legal counsel, HindmanSanchez. Being a contributing Board member requires nothing more than a willingness to do the work (which is considerable), work toward developing clear goals that support the Foundation’s vision, and executing the provisions of our governing documents that we all agreed to embrace when we bought our property in this community. New Board members quickly learn (if they don’t already know it), criticizing is far easier than doing, and requires far fewer brain cells. This is simply the old “Murphy’s Law” that states nothing is as simple as it appears. There are many reasons why a member might be reluctant to run for a seat on our Board of Directors. Still, if we are not willing to serve, we will likely end up with the kind of association we deserve, but do not like. THE HATS WE WEAR AS FOUNDATION MEMBERS As members of the Roxborough Park Foundation, there are at least three distinct hats we may be called upon to wear, each having its own set of responsibilities. Let’s examine each briefly. - The Individual Member Hat –Pay assessments, understand the governing documents, respect the decisions of the Board of Directors, understand issues facing the Foundation, etc.
- The Member of the Larger Community Hat –Understands that individual rights are to be balanced with what is best for the community as a whole as detailed in our governing documents.
- The Participating Member Hat –Participates in the planning, organizing and control of Foundation affairs. Votes in elections, attends Board meetings frequently, volunteers to serve on committees, runs for the Board of Directors, etc.
As participating members in this organization, our hope is that we continue to see an expansion in the number, and percentage of our membership wearing hat number three more often. Try it ----You’ll like it. Lots of volunteers helped Friday night with set up, and Saturday with clean up. Of course behind the scenes some helpers were prepping for crafts! Thank you to all the volunteers, and an extra special thanks to Santa for all the great gifts! We couldn't do it without you!

A Wealth of Environmental Info at Your Fingertips—The Roxborough Park Environmental Committee invites you to view its web page on the Roxborough Park web site. Here you will find a wealth of information that will help you help our community and our planet. The newest item to be featured on the Environmental Committee’s web page is a PDF of the color brochure of The Ten Most unWanted Noxious Weeds in Roxborough Park, some of which may be making their return on your property in a few short months—after all that freezing white stuff goes away. In addition to this colorful and informative brochure that helps you identify those little nasties that uglify our community is the flyer on how to order one of the best tools for easily (well, more easily) removing those long-rooted little devils in your yard. The brochure was compiled by members of the Environmental Committee with the help of Douglas County Weed Inspector and President of the Colorado Weed Management Association, Jonathan Rife, who also endorses the weeder available on the web site. Some of the other important information on the site includes a downloadable PDF of the magnetic recycling guide—of course, an actual magnetic recycling guide is available for free at the Recycling Center or the Community Center. This will help you sort out what you should sort out to reduce the amount of trash that goes into landfills. The Roxborough Park Recycling Program also helps save more than 10% on our trash removal, so we’re helping our bottom line, while helping the environment and making our community a better place to live. To visit the Environmental Committee’s web page, simply go the Park’s web site at www.Roxborough-Park.com and click on the Environmental button under Committees at the left. ANNOUNCEMENTS Douglas County Sheriff Participates In 2009 “Puffer Week.”—deputies and detectives from the Special Investigations Unit and Pattern Crimes Unit will be out in force during the week of December 14-18th, looking for “Puffers”, those that leave their vehicles running unattended. It is illegal for a person to leave a vehicle on and unattended. Deputies in marked patrol cars and plain clothes detectives in unmarked cars will be joining other law enforcement agencies throughout the state in enforcing this statute. Roxborough Area Historical Society—Annual Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday January 13, 2010. We will have a brief business meeting to elect officers followed by a presentation on the history of our neighbor, the Lockheed Martin Company. Mr. Ralph Dergance, a Lockheed Martin retiree, will share the history of the Glenn L. Martin company "from the beginning" and discuss evolution of the current company and its Denver operations. He will also speak about the company's significant and current products. The program will begin at 7 pm at the Lockheed Martin Community Room at the Roxborough Neighborhood Library. We are requesting that you make a reservation by January 10, 2010 so that we can plan for adequate seating and handout materials. For reservations, please email
